Händel: Solomon [HMC901949.50] Daniel Reuss, RIAS Kammerchor, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin
Classical | EAC APE+CUE+LOG | 2CD/702MB | Covers+Booklet | RS.com
| “ | Handel was 63 years old when he composed Solomon, one of his final masterpieces. This monumental oratorio depicts the three highpoints of the biblical king’s life: the building of the temple, the famous judgment, and the visit of the Queen of Sheba. With a dramatic instinct keener than ever, the composer did not hesitate to combine political and patriotic reflections with exaltation of carnal love and celebration of earthly riches. This ‘perfect marriage of music and English words’, as Winton Dean has called it, caused the composer serious financial difficulties in 1749 on account of the exceptional forces it required – but today, under the baton of Daniel Reuss, it finds performers totally devoted to its noble cause! | ” |

Handel: Acis and Galatea, Dunedin Consort on Linn Records
CD of the Month, Gramophone Magazine January 2009
Acis and Galatea is the Dunedin Consort's second Handel recording and follows their hugely successful 1742 version of Messiah, which earned the group a Gramophone Award for "Best Baroque Vocal Album" in 2007. Now they're back with a sensational new recording of Handel's Acis and Galatea, released November 2008.
Classic FM Magazine named ‘Acis and Galatea (Original Cannons Performing Version 1718)' by the Dunedin Consort ‘Opera & Vocal Disc of the Month' in the January issue of the magazine. In addition to awarding the recording five stars the magazine also stated "...the freshness with which they sing radiates joy throughout the entire score". This adds to the numerous recommendations and outstanding reviews that the double award-winning group have received for their recording of the pastoral entertainment by Handel."
Additionally, Gramophone named the Dunedin Consort's ‘Acis & Galatea' CD of the Month in the January 2009 issue. David Vickers, who reviewed Handel's pastoral entertainment, stated "What makes Butt and his ensemble so special is that they seem to transport us back to the composer's time, indeed to the first performances. They make the works seem once again fresh and, yes, new."
The reviewer praises all aspects of the work including John Butt's extensive research into the Cannons version and the captivating performances of the soloists and players: "The philological aspects are impeccable, and, better still, the performance is utterly magical." The closing remarks sum up the performance perfectly: "...the Dunedins have transformed the way in which we can understand and enjoy Handel's lovely early English masterpiece"
With a tip of the hat to rmnsvt whose efforts made this share possible.
