| “ | Here we present Antonio Vivaldi's Tito Manlio (RV 738-A), as performed under the direction of Ottavio Dantone and released by Naïve as part of its Vivaldi Collection. The libretto to Tito Manlio was written by Matteo Noris in 1696 for performance at the Grand Prince Ferdinando de’ Medici’s theater at his villa in Pratolino. The music was composed by Carlo Pollarola, which was performed in Venice for several consecutive seasons. Thus, when Vivaldi took up the libretto in 1719, it had been in circulation for more than 20 years. The source of the libretto is from Book VIII of Livy's The History of Rome. Noris, however, takes considerable license in departing from the facts and, indeed, the underlying rhetorical point presented in Livy's account. Two essays are presented on this work. The first is by Professor Beth Glixon entitled "Pratolino, Venice, Mantua: Musings on Vivaldi’s Tito Manlio (1718/19)," which, among other things, compares the setting by Pollarola with that of Vivaldi. The second is by Professor Andrew Dell'Antonio entitled "Pairing and Elaboration," which looks at the manner in which Vivaldi "implements by musical means the dramatic coupling of the two female roles in the libretto." | ” |

In the traditional Baroque concerto, one or more soloists are contrasted with an orchestra—usually comprised of strings and continuo. In a chamber concerto, the orchestra is replaced by a much smaller ensemble, and one that is comprised of a variety of instruments, not just strings. This means that concertante-style music is accessible to a handful of musicians. For whatever reason, Vivaldi had this genre pretty much to himself in Baroque Italy, although it was more popular elsewhere in Europe. | ” |

| “ | "With the help of a really lifelike recording – the instruments truly seemed to be in my listening room – the music just leaps off the page. The quicker movements all dance, where older and heavier bands were apt to make them slog, while in the dialogues between instruments the phrases really answer each other. In slow movements, on the other hand, the music is made to speak. Once again, it is notable – especially in the Largo of RV87 – how much more romantic this music sounds played with freedom by a small original instruments group than it ever did with larger bands who were trying to put on baroque manners. In the three cantatas, Laura Polverelli has a splendidly rich timbre, so much so that I almost took her for a contralto; but later Vivaldi sends her up to heights we don’t ask of contraltos and she ascends them with ease. Her lower notes are so splendidly rich that I wish there had been more of them....I rejoice in the sheer life of all these performances...the music is all magnificent, Vivaldi at his richest." | ” |

| “ | You don't change a winning team. so here is the second volume of the Vivaldi Edition's complete recording of the chamber concertos and cantatas with L'Astrée,whose performances have already set new standards in this repertoire. | “ | Vivaldi may be best remembered for his virtuosic concertos but, as anyone familiar with his famous D major Gloria will know, he also had a real ear for vocal sonorities. His only surviving oratorio, Juditha Triumphans, has until recently been a well-kept secret. The biblical story of Judith overcoming Holofernes and his army (beheading him herself--no shrinking violet she) was popular with both librettists and composers, offering plenty of opportunities for exuberant tub-thumping. And these Vivaldi seizes eagerly, the opening rabble-rousing chorus (here preceded by a sinfonia reconstructed by Vivaldi scholar Michael Talbot) setting the tone in truly martial fashion. However, Juditha also abounds in reflective numbers, something at which Vivaldi excels. Perhaps the most striking examples are the ethereal "turtle dove" aria ("Veni sequere fida"), with our heroine beautifully accompanied by a chalumeau (a precursor of the clarinet), the tranquil "Vivat in pace," and the sublime "Umbrae carae", here lyrically sung by Marina Comparato. The all-female lineup (five solo characters plus, on this particular recording, an all-female chorus) is a strong one. And, vitally, the soloists are well-differentiated, each with immediately recognizable timbres. Magdalena Kozena is fruity in the title role: not the kind of voice you'd necessarily associate with this repertoire, but it does turn a potentially smug heroine into one of real flesh and blood. Maria José Trullu is an opulent Holofernes, while Anke Herrmann's Abra is attractively mellow voiced. Downers? Just one--the recorded sound, which is too echoey. Overall, though, this is a fine performance of a great work and one that deserves a place on the shelves of every lover of Baroque music. --Harriet Smith | ” |
